“What are you ever going to do with those?”
Honestly, it was a fair question.

When I spotted these retro canvas-backed camping chairs at Hayfield Antiques in the Adirondacks, I almost talked myself out of buying them. They were colorful, charming, and full of retro personality, but they also looked tiny. I wasn’t even convinced an adult could comfortably sit in them, and I certainly didn’t need another pair of chairs.
Then Anna, who was working at the shop, sat right down in one and smiled. “See?” she said. She was right. They weren’t nearly as impractical as I’d imagined.
For $28 each, they were too good to leave behind. Then I spotted the matching little stool, and that sealed the deal.
As I loaded them into our RV with Ella waiting patiently, I kept thinking about that question: What am I actually going to do with these?

Turns out, quite a bit.
These little folding chairs may never become our everyday patio furniture, but they’ve already become some of my favorite styling props. From antiquing road trips and beach days to backyard picnics, kayaks, and eventually cozy fall afternoons and snowy winter scenes, they’ve reminded me that some thrifted finds don’t have to be practical to earn their place. Sometimes they’re simply full of possibility.
Let me show you what I mean.

Why I Changed My Mind About These Retro Camp Chairs
When I got back from my Adirondack RV trip, these vintage camp chairs were one of the first things I unloaded. At first, I honestly thought I’d use them mostly as styling props. They were colorful, lightweight, folded flat, and had that vintage look I couldn’t resist.
Then something funny happened.
The more I looked at them, the more I realized they weren’t just decorative.

When Anna sat down in one at Hayfield Antiques, she proved they were sturdier than I expected. Then, after doing a little research at home, I discovered that similar wooden folding camp chairs are still being made today. In fact, I found a nearly identical style from Byer of Maine, a longtime Maine company known for its portable outdoor furniture. Their folding wooden loungers are designed for the beach, camping, concerts, backyard gatherings, and all kinds of outdoor adventures.
That completely changed how I looked at my thrifted find.
Instead of wondering where I’d store them, I started thinking about all the places they could go.
So I tossed them into the car and brought them to Maine with me.

Now every time I stumble across a quiet beach, a shady spot beside the kayaks, a garden corner, or Shirley waiting for another Sunday drive, I find myself grabbing these little chairs first. They’ve become one of those unexpected thrifted finds that’s just as much about creating memories as it is about decorating.

Here are a few of the ways I’m styling them so far…and I have a feeling this little collection of ideas is only just getting started.
They Go Wherever Summer Takes You
One of the reasons I couldn’t leave these little thrifted chairs behind is because they instantly create a scene. Tucked beside a pair of kayaks, they turn an ordinary afternoon into something that feels a little more fun. Add a few simple vintage touches, a couple of retro glasses, your favorite sunglasses, and a well-loved hat, and suddenly it’s not just a place to sit. It’s a colorful setup that makes heading out on the water feel like part of the adventure.

Whether you’re launching kayaks from the lake, spending the day at the beach, or relaxing by the river, these lightweight folding chairs are easy to carry along and just as easy to set up. They’re colorful, nostalgic, and proof that sometimes the smallest thrifted finds can add the biggest personality to your outdoor adventures.

Ready for a Sunday Drive
Some vintage finds become part of your home, while others become part of your adventures. That’s exactly how I picture these colorful folding chairs. Tucked beside Shirley, our vintage VW Fastback with a well-worn road map and the car keys nearby, they feel right at home on an afternoon drive through the back roads of New England.

They’re lightweight enough to toss in the car at a moment’s notice and easy to set up whenever you stumble across a place worth stopping. Whether it’s a scenic overlook, an antique shop, or simply a quiet spot to stretch your legs, these chairs turn an ordinary drive into a destination all its own.

Sunday Home Style

Even a Non-Gardener Can Appreciate These
I’ll be the first to admit it: I don’t exactly have a green thumb. My dream would be to photograph these chairs in front of a yard overflowing with hydrangeas, but that’s just not my reality. Around here, it’s more split-rail fences, birdhouses my dad built, and cheerful daylilies that somehow manage to thrive where everything else struggles.

And honestly, these little retro camp chairs fit right in.
Whether you’re clipping flowers, pulling a few weeds, or simply wandering through the yard to see what’s blooming, they’re easy to carry wherever you need them. Toss a pair of well-loved gardening gloves over the arm, set a refreshing drink on the little stool, and you’ve created a quiet little spot to enjoy everything you’ve been working on. It’s another reminder that vintage finds don’t have to be reserved for decorating inside your home; they can add just as much personality to the everyday moments waiting just outside your back door.

Catch the Sunrise (or Stay for the Sunset)
Some vintage finds just seem to belong by the water, and these retro camp chairs are definitely one of them. They’re lightweight enough to carry across the sand, easy to tuck into the car, and just the right size for those moments when you want to sit back and enjoy the view. Add a favorite vintage picnic basket, a few well-loved beach treasures, and you’ve created a simple setup that feels charming without trying too hard.

Whether you’re watching the sun rise over the ocean, catching the last light of the day, or simply enjoying the sound of the waves, these little chairs prove that vintage style doesn’t have to stay at home.
If you’d asked me the day I bought them whether these quirky little chairs would inspire an entire blog post, I would have laughed. Now they’ve become one of my favorite thrifted finds of the summer.

Not Practical, But Definitely Worth Bringing Home
When I first spotted these retro camp chairs, I saw everything that made them easy to leave behind. They were low to the ground, a little unusual, and not something I had been searching for. But once I brought them home and started moving them from one setting to another, I understood why they had caught my eye in the first place.

They fold flat, travel easily, and bring instant color and personality wherever they land: beside the kayaks, along for a Sunday drive, tucked into a garden corner, or set up near the beach. They may never replace our everyday outdoor chairs, but that was never really the point.

Sometimes the best thrifted finds are the ones that make you imagine what you could do with them before you know exactly where they belong. These little chairs have already given me more ideas than I expected, and I have a feeling they’ll look just as good surrounded by fall leaves, or even sitting in the snow back at our home in Vermont. So stay tuned for more seasonal styling with these adorable thrifted retro camp chairs.

So, were they practical? Maybe more than I originally thought.
But full of possibility? Absolutely.
