How To Create A Cozy Sitting Room From An Open Space?

I am so excited to be able to share this cozy space with you today, friends!  Our home’s main area is a completely open floor plan.  With a kitchen, dining room, living room, and then another large open space, I could never decide what I wanted to do with it—until now, creating this open space into a cozy sitting room.

To create a Cozy Sitting Room From an Open Space, Consider These Tips:

1. Define the Area: Use area rugs or furniture arrangements to define the sitting area within the open space. This helps create a visual boundary for the cozy zone.
2. Furniture Arrangement: Arrange furniture to create an intimate seating arrangement. Position sofas and chairs to face each other, encouraging conversation. Avoid placing furniture too far apart.
3. Use of Screens or Dividers: Employ decorative screens, bookshelves, or room dividers to visually separate the sitting area from the rest of the open space. This adds a sense of enclosure.
4. Warm Colors and Textures: Choose warm and inviting colors for the walls, furniture, and accessories. Incorporate soft textures like throws and cushions to enhance the coziness.
5. Soft Lighting: Use soft and warm lighting to create a comfortable atmosphere. Floor lamps, table lamps, or string lights can add a cozy ambiance.
6. Fireplace or Faux Fireplace: If feasible, include a fireplace or a faux fireplace to bring in a sense of warmth. This can serve as a focal point for the sitting area.
7. Personalize with Decor: Add personal touches through decor items like artwork, family photos, or cherished objects. This makes the space feel more inviting and personalized.
8. Comfortable Seating: Invest in comfortable seating options, such as plush sofas or chairs. Consider adding a reading nook with a comfortable chair and a well-placed lamp.
9. Curtains or Drapes: Use curtains or drapes to frame the sitting area. This adds a sense of coziness and can be closed to create a more intimate space.
10. Accessorize: Incorporate cozy accessories like blankets, throw pillows, and soft furnishings. These not only add comfort but also contribute to the overall aesthetic.

Our Cozy Sitting Room Open Space

To the left of this space are a wrap-around couch and the main living area.  To the right of it is the dining room and the kitchen is caddy corner.

I chose the Green and white Seersucker Armchairs from the Chas Collection from Pier 1 Imports.  I love the color and texture of the stripes and the plain backing to add a light and airy feel to this open space. And they are oh so comfy, too!

A white hand-knit throw and apple tree branches from the backyard add coziness and a touch of the outdoors.

I found this marble-top coffee table at an antique shop a few years ago and painted the base white to lighten the area.  I love the old marble top!

A couple of large throw pillows from HomeGoods add that touch of coziness.

I put together this flower bouquet mostly from flowers in our backyard and an antique crock.

A vintage chalkboard with a vase of flowers (designed by my husband) provides some texture and a piece that can be transformed throughout the seasons!
