And if you’re like me, no visit is complete without wandering the aisles of The Vermont Country Store, digging through treasures at Norman’s Attic, or timing your trip around Vintage Market Days Vermont or the summer Garlic Festival.

From creameries tucked into the mountains to antique shops filled with one-of-a-kind platters and boards, this is where the inspiration for a vintage-styled Vermont cheeseboard begins—and I’m excited to share some of my favorite stops and styling ideas with you.

Creating a Vintage-Inspired Cheese Board with Vermont Farmstand Finds

After a day of exploring country stores and local creameries, there’s nothing better than heading home and styling a cheese board filled with Vermont flavors. With Dorset maple syrup, Taylor Farm Mustard, Cabbot cheddar, and Maplebrook Farm mozzarella in hand, I pulled together a small charcuterie-style board using my favorite thrifted serving pieces and vintage dishware. Styled on our porch with a mountain view (and Ella waiting patiently, of course), this board is cozy, simple, and full of local character—perfect for entertaining or treating yourself after a day of New England wandering.

Pro Tip: Style your cheese board with vintage charm.

Use a weathered wood cutting board, a silver platter, or even an antique tray as your base. Layer in thrifted glassware for jams and mustards, and add small cheese knives or spreaders with patina or mismatched handles for a cozy, collected feel.

Inspired by The Vermont Country Store: How to Build a Cheese Board with Vintage Style

One of my favorite stops on this Vermont cheese board adventure is The Vermont Country Store—where, tucked behind the cheese counter, a giant framed chalkboard lays out the simple art of building the perfect cheese board. I snapped a photo of it years ago and still think of it every time I style a board at home. Their formula is timeless:

The Cheese

Start by choosing 3–4 cheeses with different textures and flavors. Try Vermont cheddar, brie, Gruyère, chevre, or a crumbly blue. I love picking up local favorites from Maplebrook Farm, Cabbot, or a roadside farmstand creamery.

The Vehicle

These are your carriers—crackers, oatcakes, baguette slices, or Vermont Common Crackers. Stack or fan them out across your vintage platter in small clusters so they’re easy to grab and look inviting.

The Extras

This is where it gets fun: mustards, maple syrup, pepperoni or summer sausage, olives, pickles, nuts, jam, or even fresh herbs. Use small vintage glassware or thrifted ramekins to hold spreads and dips, and tuck extras into open spaces for a complete, overflowing look.

Don’t Forget the Tools!

Every board needs cheese knives, spreaders, and toothpicks—bonus points if they’re vintage, mismatched, or have a little patina.

With the chalkboard as inspiration and your Vermont finds and vintage pieces in hand, your cheeseboard becomes more than just a snack—it’s a cozy, curated moment that’s perfect for entertaining or enjoying a quiet porch evening.

How to Make a Vermont Cheese Board with Vintage Charm

Now comes the fun part—putting the cheese board together. I styled this one on our porch using a large wooden cutting board paired with a beloved antique blue and white platter that once belonged to my mother. It’s one of my favorite vintage serving pieces, and it makes the perfect backdrop for all the colors and textures of a Vermont-style vintage cheeseboard.

Around the board’s edges, I placed pumpkin pie cookie buttons from The Vermont Country Store, a handful of pumpkin seeds, and their hand-cut cheese of the day—a must whenever I visit.

I used my mother’s sterling silver cheese knives and spoons, along with a wooden vintage bowl filled with apples picked from a neighbor’s tree.

To complement the look, I added amethyst vintage glassware, small antique blue and white bowls from Vintage Market Days Vermont, and a few whimsical ceramic cheese markers shaped like cows and rams to tuck into the wedges.

I fanned the sliced cheeses for a layered look, tucked crackers around the corners, and added sliced apples for a pop of fall flavor. Small bowls held maple candies, pickles, olives, and peanuts, while the entire display came to life with a few mini pumpkins, flickering candles, and a view of the Vermont mountains in the background.

The local cheeses included:
