Vintage Halloween Ideas: 9 Staples That Get Better With a Little Imagination

As fall begins to fade here in Vermont, I always start getting excited about Halloween. I’m not one to completely transform our home for the occasion, but I do love finding vintage Halloween ideas that add a little mischief to the antiques, porch displays, and collected pieces already around us. Over the years, I’ve found that it really doesn’t take much to create a Halloween look that feels fun, eclectic, and just a bit unexpected. So whether you decorate every year or usually skip it altogether, these are some of my favorite ways to make Halloween easy while giving it a vintage twist.

1. Mannequins for an Eclectic Vintage Halloween

Mannequins are one of my favorite staples for vintage Halloween decorating, especially when I can dress them almost entirely with thrifted and collected pieces. One year, I filled our covered Vermont porch with witchy mannequins dressed in thrift-store dresses and boots, then added wigs, hats, brooms, and masks to give each one her own wonderfully eccentric personality. Antique and vintage mannequins are fabulous if you have them, but inexpensive full-size mannequins work just as well, and smaller tabletop dress forms can bring the same look to a side table or Halloween vignette. Mine stood among the antiques and late-season sunflowers on the porch—and they were unusual enough that people actually slowed down to get a better look. 2. Skeletons: Pearls, Wigs, Old Dresses, and a Little Vintage Mischief

Skeletons may be one of the most versatile Halloween decorating staples of all, especially when you skip the expected and dress them with pieces you already collect. Pull out the old dresses, shawls, wigs, hats, costume jewelry, pearls, bows, and ribbons, and give your skeleton an entirely different personality each year. I’ve put mine behind the wheel of our antique red Ford truck, turned one into an eerie woman photographer for a Halloween table centerpiece, and tucked them into chairs and unexpected corners around the house and porch. Sit one at the dining table, dress her up in a sunroom, or give her a vintage hat and a strand of pearls. You can even paint her fingernails. 3. Old-Fashioned Candy: Half the Fun Is Watching Everyone Remember It

There’s something wonderfully fun about putting out old-fashioned candy at Halloween, especially when several generations are gathered around the same table. Candy buttons stuck to paper strips, wax bottles filled with sweet liquid, Mary Janes, Bit-O-Honey, candy cigarettes, Necco Wafers, Charleston Chews, wax lips, and rock candy—the kids wonder what half of it is while the adults immediately start telling stories about their favorites. I love using old-fashioned candy for vintage Halloween entertaining because it becomes part of the decor, too. Fill vintage bowls and dishes, scatter it across a grazing table, or make the entire candy selection a throwback to another era. 4. Vintage Furs & Minks: The Thrifted Layer That Changes Everything

Vintage furs and little mink collars are some of my favorite secondhand pieces to pick up at thrift stores, where I often find them tucked away for just a few dollars. I’ve collected several over the years, and Halloween is when they really get to have some fun. Drape one around the shoulders of a skeleton, layer one onto a mannequin, or work a few into a mantel display alongside your other vintage Halloween decor. That slightly glamorous, eccentric layer can completely change the personality of a display, and these old pieces don’t have to disappear after October. I’ve used mine in Christmas decorating, vintage vignettes, and even occasionally added one to my own wardrobe. 5. Brass Candlesticks: Instant Vintage Halloween, No Matter Where You Put Them

If you collect vintage brass candlesticks, Halloween is their time to shine. I use mine year-round, but come October they seem to find their way everywhere: the mantel, dining table, bookshelves, candy displays, and little corners that need just a touch of vintage Halloween mood. Group several together and leave them empty, or add black, orange, or simple white candles. Let the wax drip down the sides for an eerier look, mix tall and short candlesticks together, or simply gather your collection on a shelf and let all that aged brass do the work. They’re one of those vintage staples I’ll always pick up when I find a good one because they never really need to be put away. At Halloween, though, they’re especially good at setting the scene.

6. Brooms: Gather Them, Hang Them, and Let Them Get a Little Witchy

There’s something about a good old-fashioned broom that makes it almost impossible not to use at Halloween. Vintage or new, I collect them and bring them out in early fall, then let them get a little witchier as October rolls around. Gather several in an old crock, basket, or vintage bucket, lean them into a corner, hang them on a barn or entryway wall, or tie them right onto your porch posts. I have a collection I bought years ago that I dress with black velvet bows, along with simple brooms from The Vermont Country Store that I use on our porch year after year. Add one to a scarecrow, change the ribbons for Halloween, or scatter a few around a room. They’re inexpensive, wonderfully sculptural, and the older and more crooked they become, the better they seem to look.

7. Vintage Chalkboards: Draw Your Own Halloween Story

An old chalkboard may be one of the easiest pieces to change with the seasons, and at Halloween you can have an especially good time with it. I once drew a collection of witchy brooms across the vintage chalkboard hanging above our dining room mantel, turning something we use year-round into instant vintage Halloween decor. Draw witches’ hats, bats, pumpkins, crooked houses, funny sayings, or whatever strikes you—using simple white chalk or bringing in a little color. Hang a chalkboard in the kitchen or entryway, prop one on an easel, use it as a Halloween welcome on the porch, or look for a small tabletop version to tuck into a vignette. Best of all, when Halloween is over, wipe it clean and start all over again. One old chalkboard can tell a completely different story every season.

I have a small black vintage doll carriage tucked away that becomes wonderfully unexpected the minute you bring it into a Halloween display. Add an old doll, tie on a black velvet ribbon, fill the carriage with old-fashioned candy, or add a collection of small pumpkins and gourds. A larger carriage could make a fabulous statement in an entryway or on a covered porch, while a small one can sit right on a coffee table or mantel. My mother always kept a pair of antique eyeglasses resting on an old book on the coffee table, and I thought it was just darling. She also had a pair of old women’s lace-up boots, the kind that already looked a little like witch’s boots, and I loved when those came out, too. Those small memories are a good reminder to look at the antiques we collect a little differently come October. Set an old book and antique spectacles on a coffee table, place a pair of Victorian-style boots nearby, or add an old handbag, gloves, hat, or a piece of costume jewelry. You don’t need to label any of it “Halloween.” Gather a few curious old pieces into a small vignette and let their age, history, and character create the vintage Halloween mood.

The more I decorate for Halloween, the more I realize that my favorite ideas usually start with things I already own, or something curious I’ve picked up secondhand along the way. You don’t need to transform your entire home or fill it with Halloween decorations.
