The witches have landed in Vermont, flying in over the mountains just in time for peak fall foliage—and apparently, they’re spending the night.

They arrived on our porch with their brooms, overnight luggage, and a few things they’ll need for their stay. With this many witches flying in, though, I had to establish a few house rules and find somewhere for everyone to park their brooms.

That’s where this year’s Halloween witch porch ideas began, along with a chalkboard by the door with three simple instructions:

Witches on the Mountain.
Please park your broom.
Doors lock at midnight.

And judging by one of the bags they brought along, apparently I wasn’t the only one at the Country Living Fair last weekend.

Halloween Witch Porch Ideas That Started with My Mannequins

I’ve always loved decorating with mannequins. I have several that move around our home, make appearances in my vintage displays, and every now and then get dressed for the season.

A few Halloweens ago, I turned them into witches and gathered them on our front porch. I dressed them in thrifted dresses, dramatic hats, wigs, feathered collars, pearls, masks, and old-fashioned brooms. Each witch seemed to develop a personality of her own, and people would actually slow down as they drove past the house to get a better look.

And then there was Ella.

You would think a Bernese Mountain Dog might have a few questions about a group of life-size witches suddenly taking over her porch. Not sassy Ella. She loved them. She’d sit right alongside them as though having witches hanging around the house was perfectly normal.

Not every dog would welcome a witch on the porch, but sassy Ella has always been happy to keep them company.

I still love that Halloween porch, and you can see all of my witchy mannequin Halloween decorating ideas here.

So maybe I shouldn’t be surprised that the witches decided to come back this year. They flew in over the mountains for another visit, and I’m pretty sure they came back to see Ella.

And judging by the number of brooms arriving on the porch, I was going to need somewhere for everyone to park.

Check Your Broom at the Door

With the witches back in town for an overnight stay, there was one obvious problem. Where exactly does everyone park a broom?

We are in Vermont, after all, so I went out to the garage and brought in an old wooden ski rack that my dad made for us years ago. Usually it’s filled with vintage skis, but for Halloween, I figured it could handle a different kind of transportation.

Out came the skis, and in went the brooms.

I’ve been gathering them as I go—old-fashioned corn brooms, a couple of smaller witches’ brooms I’ve had for years, and a wonderful faded purple broom that my friend Bernadette discovered at her mother’s house. None of them match, which makes me think these witches must have very different tastes in transportation.

My dad would get such a kick out of knowing that the ski rack he made us has officially become witch parking.

Naturally, every broom needed a name tag. I found some old-fashioned luggage tags online and started assigning names: Agatha, Winifred, Hazel, Beatrice, Mabel, Gertrude, and Ethel.

I tied a tag to each broom handle, and suddenly our little parking area had a whole guest list. I can just imagine these seven arriving over the Vermont mountains, parking their brooms, and heading inside for the night.

Halloween Witch Porch Ideas for a Moody Vermont Setting

There’s something about a rainy October morning in Vermont that makes this whole witch business seem a little more believable.

The mountains are disappearing into the mist, the trees are showing off their brilliant fall colors, and the porch boards are still wet from the rain. It’s exactly the kind of morning you’d expect a few witches to come flying in.

A mannequin witch, striped stockings, pumpkin, and hanging black umbrella set the scene as rain and mist roll through the Vermont mountains.

With the broom parking taken care of, I turned my attention to the rest of the porch. The weather had already set the scene beautifully, and I couldn’t have asked for a more fitting backdrop for this year’s Halloween witch porch ideas.

Now it was time to have a little fun with the details.

Black Umbrellas for Witches Flying in From the Storm

With a rainy October Nor’easter rolling through Vermont, I figured our visiting witches might appreciate a few black umbrellas along with their brooms. I hung one upside down from an old Christmas nail in the porch beams, opened another near the mannequin, and tucked a closed umbrella into the broom parking station. I moved them around as I photographed the porch, making it look as though the witches had dropped them wherever they landed. You never know what the fall weather will bring in Vermont, but apparently these witches came prepared!

A Chalkboard Welcome for Our Visiting Witches

I’ve always loved having a chalkboard on our Vermont porch. Sometimes it says Welcome Fall, other times Welcome to the Porch, and I change the messages throughout the seasons. This Halloween, with seven witches arriving for an overnight stay, I asked my husband, Steve, to draw up something a little different. This chalkboard has a welcome and two house rules: Witches on the Mountain. Please Park Your Broom. Doors Lock at Midnight. I think the witches will feel right at home, as long as they don’t lose track of time!

The Little Extras Every Witch Needs

Of course, no witch arrives for an overnight visit empty-handed! I draped a pair of red-and-white striped stockings over the edge of a Country Living Fair canvas bag, tucked in a plaid blanket, and added a few things for her stay. I especially love those striped stockings! You could just as easily pull them over a pair of stuffed legs beneath a mannequin’s skirt, add some pointy witches’ shoes, or leave a pair of boots by the door. Witch hats, old shawls, feathered collars, and overnight bags are all fun pieces to gather and mix together. And with seven witches visiting, there’s no reason they should all arrive dressed alike!

I have a feeling these won’t be our last Halloween visitors. Ella certainly doesn’t seem to mind the company, and with the Green Mountains putting on such a spectacular October show, who could blame the witches for coming back?

Now, whether they actually follow the midnight curfew is another story.

Happy Halloween from our Vermont porch!
