How I Fell for Johnson Brothers Autumn’s Delight While Thrifting in Maine
You never forget your first Johnson Brothers dish set, especially when it’s thrifted for just $65. I found this full set of Johnson Brothers Autumn’s Delight while out Thrifting with the Gals at The Fabulous Find in Kittery, Maine, one of my favorite spots to hunt for vintage treasures along the Southern Maine coast. It’s even included in my Vintage and Thrift Shopping Guide from Maine to Vermont!

At first glance, I’ll admit, this pattern felt a bit like something out of a grandmother’s china cabinet. When I shared it on Instagram, the reaction was… mixed. But that was the charm I saw in it. I imagined it styled on our Vermont porch, with pumpkins, vintage amber glassware, foraged fall florals, and that cozy, rustic New England backdrop. And once I brought that vision to life, everything changed. Suddenly, Autumn’s Delight didn’t feel old, it felt timeless.

This was the very first Johnson Brothers dishware set I ever owned, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve since added a few other thrifted patterns to my collection, including the charming Chintz pattern (which I also found at a thrift store, just $20 for a four-place setting!).

What Makes Johnson Brothers Autumn’s Delight Perfect for Fall Decorating
If there were ever a dishware pattern made for fall in New England, it’s Johnson Brothers Autumn’s Delight. This charming vintage pattern features a bounty of fall fruits and foliage—pears, apples, acorns, chestnuts, and golden leaves, all set against a crisp white background. The earthy colors, burnt orange, amber, mossy green, and deep brown, feel like they were plucked straight from a walk through the Vermont woods in October.

When I found the full set at The Fabulous Find in Kittery, Maine, I immediately envisioned it styled in our Vermont home. For now, I tucked it into our vintage hutch and paired it with a few simple brass candlesticks, just waiting for fall to arrive. It’s amazing how these tones echo the outdoor mountain views we love so much this time of year. You can see more of that in my post on how our mountain views inspire our seasonal decorating.

Thrifting Tip
Many thrift stores price each dish individually—$1 to $2 per plate, cup, or saucer. If you spot a full or partial set, don’t be afraid to ask for a bundled price. When I found my Autumn’s Delight set, it was a complete set marked at just $65, a steal! And recently, at a Goodwill Northern New England store, I came across a beautiful green and white Royal Dish Set, but it was clearly two large sets combined. I didn’t want that many dishes, so I asked if I could buy just four place settings. They gave me a great deal, and I left with exactly what I needed. When it comes to vintage dishware like Johnson Brothers, never hesitate to make an offer or ask if a set can be broken up, you might be surprised how flexible sellers are.

How I Styled My Johnson Brothers Autumn’s Delight Dishware in a Vintage Hutch
Since I thrifted this Johnson Brothers Autumn’s Delight set in the middle of summer, I had to wait patiently for fall to arrive before setting the table. In the meantime, I displayed it in our vintage pine hutch in the dining room of our Vermont home, and it became one of my favorite little vignettes of the season.

To create a warm and layered fall look, I started by lining the back of the hutch with white platters as a neutral backdrop. Then, I stacked the Autumn’s Delight dishes and bowls, topping each stack with a matching mug or a gravy boat to add a touch of height and charm. I brought in a bouquet of fresh flowers in golden yellows and rust tones and placed a few vintage brass candlesticks alongside the dish stacks to pull out the warm colors in the pattern. No candles, just the suggestion of what’s to come, a favorite trick of mine when I want a hutch to feel like it’s “waiting” for the next season to unfold.

Why Johnson Brothers Dishware Is Still a Beloved Vintage Favorite Today
There’s a reason Johnson Brothers dishware has stood the test of time, and why so many vintage collectors (myself included!) are still on the hunt for these charming, English-made pieces. Whether you love the nostalgic florals of the Autumn’s Delight pattern or the delicate blue-and-white motifs in some of their other collections, Johnson Brothers has a way of capturing warmth, tradition, and timeless style all in one plate.

These dishes aren’t just pretty to look at, they’re incredibly versatile. They mix beautifully with other vintage or modern pieces, making them ideal for hutch displays, open shelving, or a cozy seasonal tablescape. And because they were so widely produced and well-loved over the years, you can still find many patterns at affordable prices while thrifting or shopping secondhand.

In a world of mass-produced dishes, there’s something special about the character and history of a well-loved Johnson Brothers set. From Thanksgiving dinners to everyday fall decorating, patterns like Autumn’s Delight bring instant charm to any home, especially when styled with a little New England flair.

My husband and I have been married for over 40 years. My very first set of everyday dishes, bought at a local discount store, was a pretty floral in brown and white. Through the years pieces were broken but I still have 2 complete place settings. Love using them in the fall.
That’s so neat Rachel. They are such an old pattern and will be so pretty in the fall like yours🍃🍂
I am now on the hunt for dishes that look like this Ann. The pattern is so pretty! I’ve never seen a collection like this before.
I think it will look so cute on the porch this fall!
