It’s early spring here in Vermont, and the flowers and trees are just beginning to bud. I’ve been craving spring flowers and summer’s beautiful colors. After a day out Thrifting with the Gals this week, I wanted to combine a newly thrifted terracotta-colored copper pot that I found into a colorful spring table centerpiece.

I found the most beautiful tulips at the grocery store, which matched lovely with the thrifted copper pot. And then it struck me: so would the colors of terracotta pots! That’s when I started decorating with tulips and terracotta!

Terracotta Pots

Terracotta pots are traditional clay pots made from a porous and breathable material known as terracotta. Terracotta, which means “baked earth” in Italian, is a type of clay that is fired at high temperatures to create durable and rustic pottery. Terracotta pots are popular for gardening and decor due to their natural and earthy appearance, as well as their practicality. These pots are commonly used for planting flowers, herbs, succulents, and other plants both indoors and outdoors. Their porous nature allows air and moisture to pass through, which helps regulate soil moisture and promotes healthy plant growth. Terracotta pots come in various sizes, shapes, and designs, making them versatile for different planting and decorating needs. Their warm color and rustic texture add a touch of charm and character to any space, making them a timeless choice for gardeners and decorators alike.

Over the years, I have collected terracotta pots at garden shops and flea markets. They come in various sizes, textures, colors, etc… No two are ever alike. That’s what makes decorating with terracotta so interesting. I love the pots with all their watermarks and those that look like they have spent many summers in an outdoor garden.

I have collected terracotta pots as small as my thumb and as large as you can imagine. And if you shop smart, you can find these colorful beauties for as low as .50 cents apiece.

How to display and stack terracotta

Displaying and stacking terracotta pots can create a visually appealing and space-saving arrangement for your garden, patio, or indoor space. Here are some creative ways to display and stack terracotta pots:

  1. Tiered Terracotta Tower: Stack terracotta pots of varying sizes and shapes on top of each other to create a tiered tower. Start with a large pot at the bottom and gradually decrease the size as you stack them upward. Fill each pot with soil and plant flowers or herbs in each tier for a stunning vertical garden display.
  2. Hanging Terracotta Pot Arrangement: Use metal or macrame plant hangers to suspend terracotta pots at different heights from a pergola, tree branch, or ceiling hook. Hang the pots in a clustered arrangement to create a cascading effect with trailing plants or colorful flowers spilling over the edges.
  3. Terracotta Pot Staircase Garden: Line terracotta pots along the steps of a staircase or garden path to create a charming and organized display. Place taller pots at the back and shorter pots at the front to create a cascading effect of plants and flowers leading the way up or down the staircase.
  4. Terracotta Pot Pyramid: Arrange terracotta pots in a pyramid shape by stacking them in a triangular formation, with the largest pot at the bottom and the smallest pot at the top. Fill each pot with soil and plant different herbs or succulents in each layer to create a pyramid garden that adds height and interest to your outdoor space.
  5. Terracotta Pot Vertical Garden: Attach terracotta pots to a wooden pallet or trellis using hooks or wire to create a vertical garden. Plant a variety of flowers, herbs, or succulents in the pots and hang the structure on a wall or fence to maximize space and add a touch of greenery to your outdoor area.
  6. Nesting Terracotta Pots: Nesting smaller terracotta pots inside larger ones creates a nested effect that showcases the different sizes and shapes of the pots. Fill the larger pots with soil and plant flowers while using the smaller pots for decorative accents like candles, tea lights, or small potted plants.

Whether you opt for a vertical arrangement, a cascading display, or a nested design, terracotta pots offer endless possibilities for showcasing your favorite plants and creating a visually appealing environment.

  2. Beautiful as always. I will be keeping my eyes out for more terracotta. Here is a tip. Last year I used white ceiling paint sparingly on my few pots for that French look. It worked great and held up to the rain. The ceiling paint is very flat but durable.
