Let’s give those vintage finds the attention they deserve.

Vintage Decor Tip: Boosting Home Value

Did you know that vintage collections, like a well-styled vintage cobbler rack, can actually increase the value of your home? Real estate agents often say buyers are drawn to homes with character, especially in open floor plans where unique pieces can anchor the space. A thoughtfully curated collection tells a story, adds charm, and makes even the most modern layout feel timeless and personal.

What Is a Vintage Cobbler Rack?

Ever heard of a vintage cobbler rack? Originally used by shoemakers to store tools, leather, or finished shoes, these multi-shelf units were built to last, usually with metal or wood construction. Today, their cubby-style design and timeworn patina make them perfect for showcasing collected treasures in the home. Whether you’re storing dishes, glassware, or everyday decor, a vintage cobbler rack adds both function and character to any space.

How I Styled a Vintage Cobbler Rack in Our Open Floor Plan

This cobbler rack came home with me after I closed my vintage booth last August; it was one of the last pieces I packed up, and I just couldn’t part with it. For a while, it sat quietly behind our living room loveseat in Vermont, tucked between the dining and living areas of our open floor plan.

Then one day it clicked, why not turn it into a functional room divider and fill it with my favorite vintage collections?

So I did just that. I emptied it, refinished it, and gave it a fresh look for fall using ironstone, glassware, stacked dishes, and more. It instantly grounded the space and brought that lived-in, collected feel I love so much.

Pro Tip: How to Style a Vintage Cobbler Rack Without the Clutter

The magic of a vintage cobbler rack is in how you style it. These pieces offer so many little shelves, it’s tempting to fill every one! But too much can make it look more chaotic than collected (trust me, I’ve been there).

Here are a few tips I’ve learned for styling vintage decor in open spaces:

  • Create Defined Zones: Use furniture and shelving units like cobbler racks to subtly separate areas within an open floor plan.
  • Embrace Layering: Vary heights, textures, and tones to add cozy depth without visual clutter.
  • Stay True to Your Style: Whether your home leans cottage, coastal, or eclectic, let your personal taste guide each display.

What to Display in a Vintage Cobbler Rack

One of the best things about a vintage cobbler rack is how versatile it is when it comes to displaying your favorite pieces. Since I styled ours between the living and dining areas of our open floor plan, I focused on collections that are both beautiful and functional, especially when setting the dining table.

Think of your cobbler rack as both decor and storage. It’s the perfect place to showcase vintage dishware, seasonal finds, and charming everyday accents that deserve to be seen.

Here are a few of the collections I styled on ours:

Each piece adds texture, personality, and purpose to this display, making the cobbler rack a standout focal point and a working part of our daily life.

How to Style a Vintage Cobbler Rack with Vintage Collections

Once you’ve gathered your favorite vintage collections, it’s time to have some fun styling your vintage cobbler rack. I like to think of ours as a room divider with personality, bringing cozy charm to the open space between our living and dining areas.

There’s definitely some trial and error involved (and a little rearranging!), but that’s half the joy of vintage decorating.

Begin with the Top and Bottom Shelves of a Vintage Cobbler Rack

Begin by anchoring your cobbler rack with standout pieces on the top and bottom shelves. These two spots frame the entire unit and help set the tone for the rest of your display.

Bottom Shelf of a Vintage Cobbler Rack

The bottom rung of a vintage cobbler rack usually sits low to the ground, which makes it less ideal for fragile items like dishware or glass. Instead, I tucked in a vintage rattan suitcase; it fits perfectly, adds great texture, and instantly grounds the piece.

  • Quilts or folded blankets
  • Woven baskets
  • Vintage shoe molds
  • Books or magazines
  • Wooden bowls or trays

Choose pieces with weight, warmth, and a story, and don’t be afraid to mix materials for added visual interest.

Top Shelf of a Vintage Cobbler Rack

Now it’s time to style the top of your vintage cobbler rack, and this is where you set the tone for the whole display.

Start by choosing a color palette that complements your home’s decor. I went with my favorite white vintage pieces to create a clean, cohesive foundation. For this top shelf, I focused on larger items that add height and visual weight, like:

  • A large ironstone bowl
  • A vintage cake stand
  • A stack of white plates
  • A soup tureen
  • A tall vintage pitcher

Look for pieces that can be stacked or layered to create height; cake stands, platters, and tall vessels are perfect for this. Play around with the arrangement until it flows naturally with the rest of your space. Sometimes, just shifting one piece can make the whole shelf come together.

How to Fill Open Spaces on a Vintage Cobbler Rack

Once your top shelf has a strong foundation, it’s time to layer in the smaller details. These are the pieces that soften the look, add personality, and tie your color palette together.

Here’s what I used to fill in the open spaces on our vintage cobbler rack:

  • A set of four vintage glasses, placed on top of a cake stand
  • Small white platters tucked in behind or stacked
  • A blue and white vintage pitcher paired with matching small platters
  • A simple white sugar bowl
  • A covered blue and white jar
  • Ironstone napkin rings for texture and charm

Style the Middle Shelf of a Vintage Cobbler Rack

Once the top and bottom shelves of your vintage cobbler rack are in place, move on to the middle shelf (or shelves). This is the sweet spot, right at eye level, so it’s the perfect place to feature a favorite collection or set a tone for the rest of your display. I like to use this shelf to build color and character while balancing out the whole rack visually.

For this space, I styled a beautiful set of Irish Royal Tara dinnerware I thrifted last year. With its white base and delicate green shamrock pattern, it adds charm without overpowering the shelf. Since I don’t use this set too often, I love that it now has a home where it can be seen and enjoyed daily.

To complement the green tones, I added:

  • A stack of white and green vintage platters
  • A charming old juicer on top for height and texture
  • Cream soup bowls from the same Royal Tara set, offset for a casual, collected look

This middle shelf feels a bit more whimsical, with platters leaning and stacked just-so. Because of that, I kept the shelf directly below it more structured to create balance across the cobbler rack.

Styling a Vintage Cobbler Rack with Cake Stands

On the next shelf down, I styled a collection of four vintage cake stands in different colors, sizes, and patterns. These varied heights and whimsical shapes give the cobbler rack even more personality, while still keeping the overall display feeling balanced and intentional.

If you don’t have a collection of cake stands, no problem! This shelf is perfect for grouping similar pieces that bring height and structure. You might try:

  • Stacking bowls or shallow serving dishes
  • Displaying a set of soup tureens or pitchers
  • Arranging vintage glassware or ice buckets
  • Filling the shelf with matching platters or mixing bowls

Use what you love and what fits your style; this is your chance to be creative without overthinking it.

Displaying Wedding China on a Vintage Cobbler Rack

Most vintage cobbler racks come with six shelves, which gives you plenty of room to play with different collections. By the time I reached the second-to-last shelf, I decided to showcase something especially meaningful, our wedding china.

A complete set displayed together instantly brings a sense of order to the rack. Just like the shelf with the cake stands, this approach keeps the look cohesive and styled rather than cluttered. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to bring out pieces you may not use every day but still want to enjoy and appreciate.

Styling a Vintage Cobbler Rack with Green and Blue Collections

For the final shelf of my vintage cobbler rack, I circled back to the color story I started with, soft whites paired with greens and blues. These shades are not only my favorites, but they also bring a fresh, layered look that ties the whole piece together.

I mixed in a handful of vintage finds in these hues: platters, pitchers, and small accent pieces, to complement the whites above. The greens and blues add just enough color to make the rack feel lively, while still keeping the overall look cohesive and collected.

It’s a simple reminder that your cobbler rack doesn’t need to hold everything at once, just a few thoughtful collections that speak to your style and make your space feel like home.

Styling a Second Vintage Cobbler Rack with Linens

I loved the way our larger vintage cobbler rack worked as a room divider between the dining and living areas, so much so that I added a second, petite cobbler rack nearby. This smaller rack sits catty-corner in the space, on its original casters, which makes it easy to move around as needed.

Did You Know?

A vintage cobbler rack isn’t just for dishes; many collectors repurpose them for linens, bath storage, or even as a bookshelf. Their cubby-style shelves make them one of the most flexible vintage furniture pieces you can style in an open floor plan.

Instead of dishes, I styled this one with linens: tablecloths, placemats, napkins, and a mix of rattan and red-and-blue accents. A few wooden chargers and bowls add extra texture, but the focus here is on soft vintage pieces that bring warmth and versatility to the dining area.

5 Creative Ways to Style a Vintage Cobbler Rack

A vintage cobbler rack isn’t limited to the dining room; it’s one of the most versatile vintage pieces you can bring into your home. From open floor plans to tucked-away corners, here are five creative ways to style one:

  • As a Room Divider in Open Spaces – Place a vintage cobbler rack between a living room and dining room to anchor the space while displaying your favorite collections.
  • For Dishware and Tabletop Displays – Use it in the dining area to showcase ironstone, platters, pitchers, or cake stands. It doubles as both storage and decor.
  • As Linen Storage in a Kitchen or Closet – Folded tablecloths, napkins, and placemats fit beautifully in the cubby-style shelves, keeping them both handy and stylish.
  • For Towels and Toiletries in a Bathroom – A petite cobbler rack makes the perfect spot for rolled towels, woven baskets, and glass jars filled with bath essentials.
  • In Bedrooms or Guest Rooms – Use a cobbler rack to display quilts, blankets, or even books and collectibles. It’s a unique alternative to a traditional dresser or bookshelf.

The beauty of a vintage cobbler rack is that it adapts to your home and lifestyle. Whether you’re styling one as a focal point in an open floor plan or tucking a smaller version into a cozy corner, it brings character, storage, and timeless charm.

Your Cobblers Rack is amazing. The first time I saw it I was envious! Love how you’ve displayed your collections on it. They really stand out and it’s a perfect backdrop to separating the rooms. One of these days I’ll find one and I hope I can do it justice like you have. Great post.

  2. I just Love this post!! I am in the process of rearranging my Five curios and, while I don’t have an open rack, this is just such inspiration for new ideas on how to arrange all the china on them. I love the idea of using cloth napkins, etc. I have drawers full of them, all hidden away and am bringing some out for display. I have so many glasses for non-alcoholic drinks and am planning to arrange them differently and put them in groupings with my various sets of china. Thanks for a different type of post….I’ll be busy today, lol!! I’ve been setting up timers in two curios so the contents within show off properly. Thanks again.
