Learn how to dress up a wine bottle with a vintage faux-fur hand muff! A bougie winter idea for bar carts, champagne, hostess gifts, and more.
For years, I’ve been eyeing those old-fashioned fur hand muffs at antique and thrift stores, thinking how fabulous they’d look wrapped around a wine bottle in the wintertime. Imagine one on a vintage bar cart, an outdoor après-ski table, or even as an unexpected hostess gift. A little bougie? Absolutely! But that’s what makes this idea so much fun.
If you love antiquing and thrifting as much as I do, you’ve probably come across these furry little accessories more than once. Next time, don’t pass one up! I’m sharing how to dress up a wine bottle with a thrifted fur muff, giving this old-fashioned accessory a stylish new purpose. And the best part? You don’t even need a vintage one. You can also buy new faux fur hand muffs online, though I found a big difference between a vintage find and a modern version!

Vintage-Inspired Faux Fur Muffs: An Old-Fashioned Winter Favorite
Remember those furry hand muffs we loved as kids? I always thought they were so fancy, almost like something a princess would wear! All these years later, I still think they’re just as fabulous. Whenever I spot a fur hand muff in an antique or thrift store, I think how pretty it would look draped over an entryway bench, hanging from a vintage hook, or tucked into a guest bedroom for winter. It’s one of those nostalgic accessories that’s just too fun to leave behind.

I finally picked up a black hand muff at Stone House Antiques in Vermont for $25, which seems to be a fairly typical antique-store price. You can also find new ones on Amazon for under $20. I mostly come across black, brown, and white, and each has its own personality. White feels especially elegant indoors, black is chic and a little dramatic, and brown has that rustic ski lodge look that pairs beautifully with antique pine furniture. Each has its own appeal, and I love how easily they fit into different winter decorating styles.

How to Dress Up a Wine Bottle With a Faux Fur Muff
This might be one of the easiest decorating ideas I’ve ever shared! Because a hand muff is open at both ends, you simply slide your favorite bottle of wine inside and set it on a flat surface. The bottle rests directly on your bar cart or tabletop, rather than inside a soft fabric pouch, making it surprisingly sturdy. No sewing, gluing, or crafting required!

For a little extra personality, try adding a colorful velvet bow with a small safety pin, wrapping a pretty ribbon around the muff, or even tying on a couple of faux fur pom-poms. I chose a soft blue ribbon for my black muff to complement the blue-and-white vintage glassware on my antique green bar cart.

And don’t limit yourself to a bar cart! Imagine one on a winter dinner table, an outdoor fire pit, or wrapped around a favorite bottle of wine to bring as a hostess gift. It’s such a simple way to make an ordinary bottle feel a little extraordinary.

Vintage vs. New Hand Muffs: What’s the Difference?
After styling my vintage black hand muff, I ordered a new white one from Amazon, thinking it would be just as fabulous for a champagne bottle. And while it’s certainly pretty, I quickly noticed a big difference!

The newer muff was much taller than my champagne bottle, so I had to fold the top down to make it fit. It still looks elegant on my vintage green bar cart, but it has more of a modern wine bottle cover appearance. My vintage black muff, on the other hand, is shorter, fuller, and has that unmistakable old-fashioned character I was hoping for.

Both work beautifully for winter entertaining, but if you’re after that authentic vintage look, I’d encourage you to hunt for an older faux fur muff at an antique or thrift store. If you prefer something new, affordable, and easy to find, a modern version can be just as fun. It’s really a matter of which look you love!
