Nautical Decor Elements for a Cozy Vintage Coastal Look

Nautical decor, coastal style, beachy vibes—whatever you call it, it’s all about bringing the charm of the seaside into your home. Whether you’re lucky enough to live by the water or just love the look, nautical decor adds a breezy, relaxed feel that’s perfect for vintage styling. Think stripes, seaside treasures, and natural textures that feel like summer all year long. Here are some easy ways to add nautical flair to your favorite corners.

  • Colors: Nautical decor typically revolves around a palette of whites, blues, and neutrals. Think crisp white walls, navy blue accents, and sandy beige tones. These colors mimic the hues of the ocean and sandy beaches.
  • Stripes and Patterns: Stripes are a classic nautical motif. Incorporate them into your decor through striped rugs, pillows, or even wallpaper. Other patterns commonly found in nautical decor include anchors, sailboats, and seashells.
  • Natural Materials: To bring in a coastal feel, opt for natural materials such as jute, rattan, and weathered wood. Wicker furniture, rope accents, and driftwood decor pieces can add texture and warmth to your space.
  • Nautical Accessories: Incorporate nautical accessories to complete the look. Hang a ship’s wheel on the wall, display vintage maritime maps or navigational instruments, and use rope or netting as decorative elements. Seashells, coral, and starfish can be displayed in glass jars or used as accents in a centerpiece.
  • Anchors and Sails: Incorporate elements from sailing and boating, such as anchor motifs or sail-inspired decor. Hang a large anchor on a wall or use small anchor-shaped hooks to hang towels or hats. Consider using sailcloth as curtains or upholstery fabric.
  • Lighting: Use lighting fixtures that resemble lanterns or marine-inspired fixtures like porthole-style wall sconces. Soft, warm lighting can create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
  • Nautical Artwork: Hang coastal-themed artwork on your walls to enhance the nautical ambiance. Paintings or prints depicting sailboats, lighthouses, or beach scenes can add a touch of coastal charm.
  • Textiles: Choose fabrics that evoke a relaxed, beachy feel. Lightweight linen or cotton curtains, throw pillows with marine-inspired prints, and striped or anchor-patterned bedding can all contribute to the nautical aesthetic.
  • Seating and Furniture: Opt for comfortable seating with a casual beachy vibe. Wicker or rattan chairs, slip-covered sofas, or Adirondack chairs can create a laid-back coastal look. Choose furniture pieces with a weathered or distressed finish for a more authentic feel.
  • Nautical Details: Finally, don’t forget the small details that can make a big impact. Display glass jars filled with sand and seashells, use nautical-themed hooks for hanging towels or coats, and incorporate coastal-inspired signage or quotes.

Why I Love Decorating with Nautical Decor

Nautical decor has a timeless quality that always brings me joy. Whether it’s a vintage find with a seafaring past or a coastal color palette that reminds me of summers in Maine, it’s a style that feels both comforting and classic. It connects me to the water, to my travels, and to my home’s story.

Unexpected Nautical Inspiration from a Farm Stand Find

You never know where your home decor inspiration will come from—am I right? For this cozy nautical corner in our coastal Maine living room, it all started with a simple bouquet I picked up at a roadside farm stand.

Nestled inside? A mix of dill and garlic scapes that not only smelled like summer but looked wonderfully whimsical in a vintage silver champagne bucket.

Coastal Vases That Double as Nautical Candle Holders

A week later, most of the bouquet had wilted—but those garlic scapes? Still going strong. Their twisty, sculptural shapes had me swooning, and I knew they needed a special home. That’s when I spotted the tall blue glass vases I picked up from one of my favorite local spots, The Shops at Cape Neddick.

These coastal vases are tall, elegant, and totally nautical.

And here’s the best part: flip them over and they double as candlestick holders!

I use the taller set here in Maine, and I keep a smaller set up in Vermont, styled with candles or candies depending on the season.

Decorating with Vintage Seabirds and Driftwood

One of my favorite parts of this nautical decor corner is a collection of vintage seabirds perched on aged driftwood—each one once part of my mother’s cherished coastal collection.

Pro Tip

Look for vintage or hand-carved seabirds when thrifting or antiquing—they make perfect accents for dressers, mantels, bookshelves, or windowsills and pair beautifully with natural elements like shells, stones, and of course, driftwood.

These sweet sculptures add instant seaside charm and a nostalgic nod to beachcombing days gone by.

Placed on a vintage wooden dresser beneath soft blue garlic scapes, the driftwood textures and weathered paint tones help create a relaxed, layered look that’s full of coastal character.

Why I Collect Montague Dawson Nautical Paintings

Hanging above this coastal corner is a framed sailing ship print by Montague Dawson, one of my favorite maritime artists to collect. Dawson (1890–1973) was a British painter known for his dramatic depictions of 18th- and 19th-century sailing ships—his work captures that classic nautical spirit so beautifully.

I found this piece, titled Neck and Neck, during a day of antiquing down east in Maine, and later stumbled upon another Dawson print, A Winning Tack, for under $30 while treasure-hunting in Vermont.

Nautical Curtains with a Vintage Yacht Story

These nautical drapes are one of my all-time favorite vintage finds—and they come with quite the backstory. Originally custom-made for a yacht in the 1970s, they’re decked out in bold red, white, and blue with classic sailboats and ship wheels (also called helms!) woven right into the pattern.

I discovered them at an antique shop, and the moment I saw them, I knew they were meant for our living room in coastal Maine.

Not only did they fit our windows perfectly—like they were made for the space—but they brought instant charm, color, and conversation to the room.

Decor Tip

When styling a coastal space, don’t shy away from statement textiles—especially ones with a story. Thrifted or vintage curtains with maritime motifs (like sailboats, anchors, or even classic navy stripes) are an easy way to introduce color, movement, and texture. Plus, they create a lived-in, collected-over-time look that modern store-bought decor just can’t match.

They’re not your everyday curtains, and that’s exactly why I love them. One-of-a-kind vintage drapes like these can completely transform a room and infuse it with personality and nautical flair.

Decorating with Vintage Dressers in a Coastal Living Room

If there’s one piece I can’t live without in home decorating, it’s a vintage dresser. I truly have one in every room—living room, bedrooms, bathrooms, even the sunroom! They add instant warmth, character, and a collected-over-time look that works beautifully with nautical decor.

You can find vintage dressers and antique bureaus in all shapes and sizes, often for under $100 at thrift stores and secondhand shops.

In this coastal Maine corner, a wooden dresser anchors the space beneath vintage seabirds, nautical curtains, and my beloved Montague Dawson painting.

Add a thrifted lamp, a round nautical pillow, and some antique artwork, and you’ve got a cozy little vignette full of story and charm.

Choosing the Best Furniture Colors for a Coastal Living Room

When decorating a coastal living room, I love combining classic linen slipcovers with navy blue accents for that relaxed, nautical look. At our home, I mix in bold reds, vintage wood tones, and soft pastels to create a cozy yet fresh feel. Slipcovered furniture (My favorites are from Four Seasons Furniture) is especially perfect for coastal homes—it’s washable, low-maintenance, and breezy enough to feel like summer all year long. Don’t be afraid to add a pop of red—it brings warmth and energy to soft blues and natural textures.

Styling with Antique Easels and Nautical Wall Art

One of my favorite ways to add depth and charm to a coastal corner is with an antique easel and a vintage seaside painting. I picked up this wooden easel last summer while antiquing at Cabot Mills in down east Maine, and I love moving it around the room.

Right now, it’s holding a beautiful lighthouse painting I thrifted—another piece that adds to our nautical decor story.

II hope this quaint little corner of nautical decor with its vintage wow factor sparked a bit of inspiration for your own home today. Whether you’re styling with shorebirds, driftwood, vintage sailboat paintings, or even a few whimsical garlic scapes in a coastal vase, it’s all about creating spaces that feel personal, cozy, and full of seaside charm.

Nautical decor is about more than just anchors and ship wheels—it’s about crafting a peaceful, refreshing atmosphere that reminds us of the sea. By incorporating vintage pieces, coastal colors, and meaningful treasures, you can bring that laid-back ocean breeze indoors and enjoy it all year long.

Quaint Nautical Decor Corner with all the antique coastal vibes including a red chair with a lobster pillow.

Nautical decor is an interior design style inspired by the sea, ships, and coastal living. It often features elements like navy blue, white, red accents, driftwood, rope, anchors, and maritime artwork to create a breezy and relaxed seaside feel in your home.

To decorate in a nautical style, start with a coastal color palette—think navy, crisp white, soft blues, and touches of red. Layer in vintage seaside accents like ship wheels, lighthouses, nautical pillows, driftwood, and coastal wall art to create a collected, beachy look.

Nautical decor often includes a classic color scheme of navy blue, white, red, and neutral tones like tan or sand. Soft pastel blues, seafoam greens, and natural wood tones can also enhance the cozy coastal aesthetic.

While both styles embrace ocean-inspired themes, nautical decor leans into ship and sailing elements—like anchors, ropes, and bold navy colors. Coastal decor tends to be lighter and airier, with soft blues, sandy neutrals, and breezy textures like linen and rattan.

You can find vintage nautical decor at antique shops, thrift stores, flea markets, and even estate sales—especially in coastal towns. Look for items like framed sailing prints, model ships, vintage seabirds, or custom yacht textiles for that authentic coastal charm.
