Styling Tip of the Day

This simple centerpiece is one of my favorite ways to style red, white, and blue for the summer holidays. I arranged full white hydrangeas in a large vintage basket and draped a worn American flag over the edge for a soft, nostalgic look. It’s easy, affordable, and makes a beautiful statement on a dining room table or sideboard.

Why I Styled This Patriotic Centerpiece

I picked up these big, beautiful white hydrangeas at Trader Joe’s just before the Fourth of July and wanted a way to display them that felt festive but effortless. This large woven basket had the perfect height and texture, and I loved how it paired with a few vintage flags I’ve collected over the years. The result was a charming red, white, and blue centerpiece that came together in just minutes.

Decorating with Vintage Baskets and Crates

Baskets and crates make an ideal foundation for patriotic centerpieces. This tall, textured vintage basket gives the hydrangeas height and visual weight while keeping the overall look soft and welcoming. You could also use an old crate, crock, or enamel bucket to create a similar vintage vibe.

White Hydrangeas for Patriotic Centerpieces

To create this look, I placed a large vase of water inside the basket and arranged the long-stemmed hydrangeas so they filled out the entire top. Their fluffy white blooms contrast beautifully with the red and blue in the flag and surrounding decor. Don’t be afraid to overfill—hydration is key to keeping hydrangeas looking plump and full.

Flag Draping for a Simple Patriotic Accent

One of my favorite styling tricks is to use small, weathered flags I’ve collected over the years—most from our own flagpole at home. I simply tucked one corner of the flag into the hydrangeas and let it drape over the edge of the basket and onto the table. The result is casual but intentional, adding just the right red and blue balance to this white centerpiece.

Ultimate Guide to Grow and Care for Hydrangeas for Beginners

The Complete Guide to Hydrangeas Care

My friend, Kim from Shiplap and Shells, shares her Ultimate Guide to Grow and Care for Hydrangeas for Beginners if you are thinking of adding hydrangeas to your gardens for future red, white, and blue centerpieces.

Tip – Keep Hydrangeas Fresh with Hot Water

Hydrangeas are notorious for wilting, but here’s a trick from my friend Kim at Shiplap and Shells: refill the vase with hot water daily. This prevents the stems from sealing themselves, which can block water flow and shorten the life of your blooms. It’s a small step that makes a big difference in how long your centerpiece lasts!

Decorating with Vintage White Chamber Pots

Later, I added a few vintage white chamber pots I found while Thrifting with the Gals. Their clean white finish pairs beautifully with the hydrangeas and complements the red, white, and blue color palette. I scattered them around the base of the basket for added dimension and a touch of farmhouse charm.

Frequently Asked Questions About Patriotic Centerpieces with Hydrangeas

How do you make a patriotic centerpiece with hydrangeas?

Start with a large basket or container, add a vase of water inside, and fill it with fresh white hydrangeas. Finish the look with a small American flag tucked into the blooms or draped over the edge.

How do you keep cut hydrangeas from wilting?

Use hot water in your vase and refresh it daily. The heat keeps the stems from sealing over, which helps your hydrangeas stay hydrated and fuller longer.

What can I use instead of a basket for a red, white, and blue centerpiece?

Try vintage crates, white enamel buckets, galvanized tins, or even a dough bowl. The key is to pair your container with classic Americana colors and seasonal florals for an easy patriotic look.
