I Finally Fell for Vintage Copper, Just in Time for Fall

Vintage copper brings warmth, patina, and character to fall decor. See how I’m styling my latest antique find for a moody autumn look at home.

Some vintage finds just seem to arrive at exactly the right time. I’ve admired vintage copper for years, but somehow I’d never brought much of it home—until I spotted this collection of vintage copper mugs while antiquing at Stone House Antiques in Chester, Vermont. The warm copper, wonderful old patina, and that fabulous tray holding them all together seemed made for this time of year.

At $45 for the entire set, I couldn’t leave them behind. And just like that, I’m looking at vintage copper in a whole new way, experimenting with how its warmth and patina mix with the collected pieces already in our home. I can already picture it carrying me from these crisp days on the porch straight into après-ski season this winter.

Warming Up to Fall with Vintage Copper

Once I brought the collection home, I knew exactly where I wanted to start—with the porch. It’s where we spend so much of our time this time of year, and I had a feeling all that warm, aged copper would look beautiful against the old wood of my vintage wallpaper table and the changing Vermont colors beyond it. I set the tray down, arranged the mugs, and before I’d added another thing, I loved the way it looked. Maybe I’ve been overlooking vintage copper all these years.

With a nor’easter making its way through New England, it felt like the perfect kind of day to stay close to home and play around with my new find. I pulled out an old jar of cloves, sliced an apple, and rummaged through the spice cabinet for cinnamon sticks and star anise.

Nothing fancy, and nothing bought for the occasion—just a rainy fall afternoon and a few things I already had around the house. As I kept adding to the table, I loved how the rich copper tones played against all those familiar autumn colors and textures.

And then there was my foraged fall arrangement, which has been growing right along with the season. I’ve been adding to that old blue bucket after walks and little outings with Ella, bringing home whatever catches my eye along the way. Setting it beside the copper pulled the whole vignette together—the blue of the old bucket, the changing leaves and flowers, and that wonderful aged copper all mixed together. One was gathered a little at a time outdoors while the other was an unexpected antique-shop find. That’s usually when I know a vintage find was meant to come home with me.

And just when I thought I couldn’t love these vintage copper mugs any more, I found a beautiful old Iranian textile at the Taconic Antiques Fair. Put the two together, and suddenly I had a whole new way to play with vintage copper.

A Quick Note About Vintage Copper

Before drinking from vintage copper mugs, take a look inside. Unlined copper shouldn’t be used with acidic drinks like apple cider, citrus juices, or wine, as the acid can cause copper to leach into the beverage. Since I don’t know the history or materials of these old mugs, I used water for my photos. When in doubt, enjoy vintage copper for styling and display, or have an older piece checked before using it for drinks.

Bringing Fall Indoors with the Warmth of Vintage Copper

After playing with the copper out on the porch, I wanted to bring those same warm fall colors indoors and see what might happen on my scullery table. This is the kind of space where I love to dabble with my latest vintage finds, moving things around and mixing old pieces together until a little story begins to take shape. This time, it started to feel like one of those Vermont fall afternoons when you come home from apple picking, a hike, or a walk in the woods and something warm is waiting on the table.

Warm vintage copper meets the rich blues and intricate pattern of my antique Iranian textile on the scullery table.

So I went with it. I brought out an old soup tureen and wooden bowls, gathered a few of my vintage oil lamps, stacked some old books for height, and mixed in apples, spices, dried flowers, and my newest finds.

Vintage copper, antique oil lamps, old books, and scattered branches begin to turn my scullery worktable into a colorful fall scene.

Nothing is meant to be too perfect here. I wanted it to feel a little like fall itself—collected, colorful, slightly messy, and full of all those things that seem especially good this time of year. And right in the middle of it all, that aged vintage copper feels warmer than ever.

I Think I’ve Found My New Vintage Love

Somewhere between the porch and this table, I think vintage copper officially won me over. For years, I admired it in antique shops but always wondered where it would fit among everything I already collect. Now I’m looking at these old mugs mixed in with my oil lamps, books, old spice jars, textiles, and all the other pieces I tend to bring home, and I’m wondering why I waited so long.

Maybe that’s what I was missing about copper. I thought of it as something you collected on its own—rows of gleaming pots hanging in a kitchen or beautiful old molds covering a wall. But I don’t need a copper collection. I like it much better mixed in with everything else, especially when it’s old, tarnished, and showing its age.

And now, of course, my mind is already wandering ahead. I can picture this same copper surrounded by evergreens when the holidays arrive, tucked among winter whites, or warming up one of those snowy Vermont days when everything indoors wants a little extra warmth.

Apparently, one tray of old copper mugs was all it took.

So I suppose this is how a new collection begins—not because I went looking for one, but because one unexpected find made me see vintage copper differently. I’m not sure what the next piece will be, but I have a feeling I’ll be paying a little more attention to the copper shelves the next time I’m out antiquing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Vintage Copper

How can you tell if vintage copper is real?

Real copper typically has a warm reddish-brown color and develops a natural patina as it ages. Older pieces may show darkening, spotting, or even blue-green verdigris. A magnet generally won’t stick to solid copper, although handles, hardware, or other components may contain different metals.

Should you polish vintage copper or leave the patina?

It’s a matter of preference. Polishing vintage copper restores more of its original shine, while leaving it untouched preserves the darker, aged patina that many collectors love. I prefer the character of old copper just as I find it.

Is it safe to drink from vintage copper mugs?

Use caution with vintage copper drinkware. Unlined copper should not be used for acidic beverages such as apple cider, wine, or citrus drinks because copper can leach into the beverage. With older mugs, the material and condition of any lining should also be considered before drinking from them.

How can you decorate with vintage copper for fall?

Vintage copper pairs naturally with autumn colors and textures. Try mixing copper mugs, trays, pitchers, or pots with aged wood, foraged branches, fall foliage, seasonal fruit, and other collected vintage pieces.

How do you clean and polish vintage copper?

Start by washing vintage copper gently with warm water and mild dish soap, then dry it thoroughly. To restore shine, you can use a copper polish or a gentle homemade paste of lemon juice and salt. Always test a small area first, especially with antique pieces. If you love the naturally aged patina, skip the polishing altogether and simply clean the piece gently.
