As the crisp mountain air settles over Vermont, it’s the perfect time of year to create fall tablescapes that wow, especially on the porch.

This vintage fall tablescape began with a charming set of thrifted Johnson Brothers Chintz dinner plates, discovered during one of our Thrifting with the Gals adventures in Maine. I couldn’t believe the $20 price tag!

I shared more about this find in my post on Thrifting for a Cause: 8 Vintage Home Decor Finds from Maine’s Another Chance Thrift Shoppe post, and how I stored them safely for the season in this Pie Safe Antique Kitchen Cupboards Decorating Ideas post.

The Chintz pattern by Johnson Brothers is a timeless favorite for styling vintage fall tablescapes, whether on the porch or in a cozy dining room setting.

This iconic floral design, originally crafted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is beloved for its delicate blooms and soft, romantic color palette. Autumn Color Palette for a Vintage Fall Tablescape

When creating a fall tablescape with vintage Johnson Brothers Chintz dinnerware as your focal point, choosing the right autumn color palette is key to setting a cozy and cohesive mood.

Begin by pulling inspiration from the delicate florals in the Chintz pattern, soft blue tones, deep reds, and golden yellows all echo the warmth of the season while complementing the vintage china’s charm.

Layer these colors throughout your fall table decor, from linen napkins to seasonal florals like hydrangeas and tapered candles in rich hues. This simple styling trick adds depth and elegance to your tablescape without overwhelming the vintage details.

By centering your color palette around the Johnson Brothers Chintz, your autumn table setting will feel thoughtfully styled, inviting, and distinctly vintage, perfect for gathering on a crisp fall day.

Embracing Natural Elements in Fall Tablescapes

One of the most charming ways to elevate your fall tablescapes, especially in an outdoor setting, is by embracing the beauty of natural elements. These seasonal touches add warmth, texture, and a rustic elegance that pairs beautifully with vintage Johnson Brothers china and cozy fall decor.

Here are a few favorite natural accents to include in your autumn table setting:

  • Foraged Leaves—Scatter colorful autumn leaves across your table for a bold and vibrant touch.
  • Pinecones—Nestle pinecones into your centerpiece or along the table runner for a cozy, woodland feel.
  • Acorns—Display acorns in vintage bowls or scatter them around the table as subtle fall accents.
  • Branches or Twigs—Lay thin twigs down the center of the table for an organic, minimalist base.
  • Seasonal Flowers—Use wildflowers or dried blooms in earthy hues like mustard, rust, and cream to echo the tones in your Chintz dishes.
  • Apples—Fresh apples and pears add color, fragrance, and charm—perfect for harvest-inspired tablescapes.

These natural elements not only highlight the beauty of fall but also complement the floral Chintz pattern for a look that feels both collected and intentional.

Creating Your Beautiful Fall Tablescape

Now, let’s bring everything together to create a beautiful fall tablescape that feels both effortless and elegant.

Start by layering your vintage Johnson Brothers china with seasonal touches, like apples, pears, and foraged foliage, to create a warm and inviting harvest-inspired table. Then, build a simple yet striking fall centerpiece using natural elements such as pinecones, hydrangeas, or dried wildflowers.

By keeping the focus on the delicate floral pattern of the Chintz dishes and complementing it with a soft autumn color palette, your fall table setting will feel curated, cozy, and perfect for porch-side dining or indoor gatherings alike.

Curating Your Favorite Things for a Fall Tablescape

When designing a vintage fall tablescape, I always begin by gathering a few of my favorite things, pieces that complement the vintage dinnerware I’ve already chosen. I lay everything out on the table to see how it all works together before styling begins.

This helps create a cohesive look and gives me a visual roadmap for building the perfect autumn table setting.

Here are a few fall tablescape essentials to consider including:

Here are a few Fall Tablescape suggestions:

  • Placemats – Layer for texture and color.
  • Linens | Napkins – Choose soft tones that echo your fall palette.
  • Silverware – Vintage silver or mixed-metal flatware adds charm.
  • Glassware – Mix clear and colored glasses to reflect the season.
  • Matching Bowls – Tie in your Johnson Brothers pattern or vintage soup bowls.
  • Natural Elements – Think pears, acorns, pinecones, and foraged branches.
  • Flower Vases – Small vessels for hydrangeas or dried florals.

Curating your favorite vintage and seasonal items in advance makes styling your fall tablescape more enjoyable and personal.

Fall Tablescape Glassware and Accent Colors

One of the most fun parts of creating a fall tablescape is choosing the perfect glassware to complement your vintage dinnerware.

Here, you can see the various colored glasses I laid out to test with my Johnson Brothers Chintz pattern. Which color would you choose?

Fall tablescape curation of different colors and patterns.

I ultimately selected the light blue goblets, and from that moment, blue became my chosen accent color for this festive fall setting. There’s a hint of blue in the Chintz pattern, barely noticeable at first, but when paired with the right elements, it truly pops.

Yellow was another beautiful option that paired well with the china’s warm tones, but I didn’t have quite enough yellow pieces to complete the look.

This process is why I always recommend curating your colors and patterns before styling your fall tablescape. Whether you’re working with vintage pieces or mixing in modern touches, pulling your palette together first ensures a cohesive and elevated table setting.

Silverware for Your Fall Tablescape

Lately, I’ve developed a bit of a thing for tablescape silverware settings, and who can blame me? From antique sterling to cheerful Bakelite, there’s something swoon-worthy about vintage flatware.

For this fall tablescape, I chose to use my mother’s sterling silverware, which always adds a touch of elegance and sentimentality. While in Maine this summer, I also found a faux blueberry branch at a thrift shop along with some beautiful sterling serving spoons I’d been hoping to incorporate into our fall porch table.

To tie it all together, I snipped pieces of the blueberry branch and wrapped each silverware set with a soft blue ribbon.

Styling Tip

Fold your ribbon in half and snip on the diagonal toward the fold for a clean, professional-looking edge!

Fall Table Linens for an Outdoor Tablescape

Since we’ll be dining outdoors on the porch, I’m keeping our fall table linens simple and fuss-free.

I chose four round blue placemats, a lucky thrift shop find from just the other day, and paired them with a set of vintage blue napkins I picked up a few years back at one of my favorite antique shops.

The soft blue tones help tie together the Chintz dinnerware, glassware, and overall fall color palette for a cohesive, vintage-inspired table setting.

Simple Fall Centerpiece with Vintage Hydrangeas

To keep with the soft, curated color palette of this fall tablescape, I created a simple fall centerpiece using blue hydrangeas arranged in a vintage blue stoneware pitcher.

The soft blues in the florals echo the tones in the Johnson Brothers Chintz dinnerware, while the pitcher adds a rustic, collected feel, perfect for a vintage-inspired fall table.

Fall Tablescape Gold Accents for a Warm Glow

Incorporating gold accents is one of the easiest and most effective ways to elevate your fall tablescape, adding instant warmth and a cozy seasonal glow.

Pair your favorite vintage brass candlesticks with soft blue tapered candles to complement the tones in your Johnson Brothers china and tie your entire fall table setting together. The contrast between the brass and blue adds depth and elegance without overwhelming the vintage charm of the dishware.

These small, intentional touches, like brass, candlelight, and layered textures, create a fall atmosphere that feels timeless, personal, and oh-so-inviting.

Dining Room Table Inspiration with a Vintage Wallpaper Table

The wooden table I used for this fall porch tablescape is actually a vintage wallpaper table, a secondhand find I stumbled upon several years ago. It quickly became one of my favorite pieces and now serves as our charming dining room table on the covered porch.

Vintage wallpaper tables come in a variety of shapes and sizes, often with collapsible legs and long, narrow surfaces, making them perfect for both indoor and outdoor use. This one was the ideal height for dining and brought just the right amount of antique character to our fall table setting.

I also have a taller wallpaper table that I use as a craft table, its standing height makes it perfect for projects, and I love how both pieces add function and charm to our home.

  1. I love the blue paired with these dishes.

  2. Lora Bloomquist says:

You created such a beautiful Fall tablescape, Ann! Love, love, love those dishes. Think my dish-loving grandma had a couple teacups with that pattern. Didn’t realize it was a Johnson bros. pattern. I picked up a few Johnson bros salad plates that would coordinate beautifully with those. Now I want to set a fall table with them;) Always so fun to see all your pretty vintage things, displayed beautifully.

  3. I love this, Ann! Your vintage tableware is beautiful as always, I absolutely love the way you styled this tablescape! So glad we got to do this together!!

  4. This is one of the most gorgeous tablescapes I’ve ever seen! I’m obsessed with the entire table and that dinnerware!!! Thank you for inspiration, I always have such a hard time creating tablescapes.

    Ann
Oh my gosh I love those dishes. I’ve never seen that pattern anywhere. Okay I’m heading to the antique mall. I’m sure I can squeeze another set into my storage spaces. LOL. Great post and inspiration Ann!

  6. Wow……what a fabulous find. I have never seen The Old English Chintz. It is just gorgeous. Must be very rare because even The Rose Chintz is rarely seen in resale stores. You are blessed to have found so many pieces of this terrific pattern to set an inviting table.

I have been a lover of Johnson Brothers since the 1970’s when I was a young wife.
My most recent purchase has been their Devon Cottage pattern. It is lovely, esp. the salad plates. My first set of Johnson Brothers was “Arbor”, a lovely pattern
of fruit and it went well with my farmhouse kitchen at our farm. We lived in a very old frame farmhouse in Pennsylvania.

I wish I lived closer to New England. My mid- atlantic area has much less resale shops than we had ten years ago. Now, these resale shops around me have basically junk. I know that Pottery Barn is popular but without the charm of Johnson Brothers.

    1. Hi Patricia, I love the Johnson Brothers’ patterns too, especially during fall. Can you believe this set was only $20 at a thrift shop, it is very rare they told me. Thanks for your sweet note and for following along.

      1. That was a steal,
        Enjoy them.
