Summer Window Box Ideas with Geraniums and a Simple DIY Mount
Ever look at your home from the outside and feel like it’s missing a little something? I know the feeling all too well, especially in the summer. That’s when I remembered the old white window boxes we used to have at our Vermont home. I brought them up to our coastal Maine home, thinking they’d be the perfect touch on either side of the garage.

To give them a fresh coastal look, I painted the existing wooden flower box mounts a rich Essex green to match the house trim. It created a crisp contrast with the white boxes and that really made the red geraniums pop.
Once the paint dried, we simply drilled the mounts below each garage window, a quick and easy DIY window box installation that completely transformed the space with curb appeal and summer charm.

How to Install a Window Box with Easy DIY Mounts
This quick DIY project is as simple as it gets. Here’s how we did it:
1. Paint your window box mounts (optional): We gave ours a fresh coat of Essex green paint to coordinate with the house trim.
2. Position the mounts beneath your windows: Make sure they’re level and spaced to support the full length of your window box.
3. Drill the mounts into place: Using an electric screwdriver, attach the mounts to the exterior wall with a couple of sturdy screws.
4. Place your window boxes on top: Once secured, simply rest the flower boxes on the mounts, and you’re done! For added stability, you can also secure the window boxes directly to the mounts with a screw or two through the base.
That’s it! This easy window box installation takes just minutes and instantly adds charm and seasonal curb appeal to your home.

Red Geranium Window Box Styling Ideas for Summer Charm
We filled each summer window box with seven to eight small potted bright red geraniums and lush green leaves, picked up from our local garden shop. These vibrant blooms instantly added a cheerful pop of color and classic curb appeal to our garage windows. We simply rested the flower boxes on the freshly painted green wooden mounts, creating a timeless red, white, and green color combination that feels perfectly coastal and patriotic.

Pro Tip
Geraniums come in a variety of colors, so feel free to mix it up with pinks or whites—or even opt for artificial geraniums if you’re looking for a low-maintenance option with the same bold impact.
Patriotic Window Box Ideas with American Flags and Red Geraniums
Decorating with Vintage U.S. Flags for the Fourth of July
Over time, I’ve collected a handful of weathered American flags from our Vermont home’s old flagpole, each one holding special memories. Rather than discard them, I love giving them a new life in our summer decor. For this display, I gently wrapped two of those vintage flags around the window boxes to honor the upcoming Fourth of July weekend. It’s a simple, sustainable way to add patriotic charm while keeping the focus on the geraniums.
